A flat, oval-bodied pencil with a wide rectangular graphite core. The flat body stops it rolling off framing, and the wide core draws a line that shows on rough lumber. Sharpen it with a knife or a purpose-made sharpener, and keep the line thin for accurate cuts.
Buying tip
Flat body won't roll off joists. Buy a box — you will lose them constantly.
